🏅 Two Kinds of Nice Gates

MODULE 1 · EXERCISE 4

Unitary vs. Positive — and the one special gate that is BOTH

🎯 The big idea (for everyone)

Unitary gate = a perfect, reversible move. It never loses any information — you can always rewind it. ↩️
Positive gate = a gentle stretch. It only makes things bigger or keeps them the same — it never flips a sign. All its stretch numbers are 0 or more. ➕
The surprise: some gates are one kind but not the other. And only ONE gate in the whole world is both at once — the "do nothing" gate (the identity, I).
Executive / UChicago layer: (a) diag(1, i) is unitary (U†U = I) but not Hermitian, so unitary ⇏ Hermitian. (b) diag(2, 1) is positive (eigenvalues 2, 1 > 0) but not unitary. (c) If P is unitary and positive, then P = P† and P†P = I ⟹ P² = I; a positive operator with P² = I must be I. So the only unitary positive operator is I.

🎮 The Gate Tester — tap each gate to scan it

Tap a gate. The scanner checks: is it unitary (reversible)? Is it positive (no sign flips)? Find the one that lights up both badges!
